The Delegation of the Competition Council of the Republic of the Moldova has initiated collaboration with representatives of authorities and institutions working in areas of common interest in the United States of America. The delegation was present in Washington to receive Honorable Mention Award, given by the World Bank Group (WBG) in the contest “Actions in promoting competition”, the representatives of the Competition Council met with US officials and established cooperation methods.
Thus in the future is possible the implementation of technical assistance projects by which the Competition Council of the Republic of Moldova will benefit from the experience of colleagues from overseas. This was one of the discussed issues at the meeting that Viorica CARARE the President of the Competition Council of the Republic of Moldova and Veacheslav GUTUTUI member of the Plenum of the Competition Council, have had with representatives of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice, Division US antitrust (DOJ), headed by Mr. Russell W. DAMTOFT, Director, Office of International Relations (FTC) and Mrs Melanie L. KREBS- PILOTTI, Head of Foreign Trade Section, antitrust Division (DOJ).
Among the areas of concern addressed in future technical assistance projects are: implementing the principles of institutional performance of the activity of the competition authority, strategic planning in competition, techniques and methods to investigate violations of competition legislation, the application of econometric methods in determining the impact of cartels, cooperation of various public authorities in the process of investigation of anticompetitive cases.
Also, the results obtained by the Competition Council of the Republic of Moldova were appreciated by the World Bank Group, who expressed interest in continuing collaboration with the authority of our country. The president of the Competition Council, Viorica CARARE, discussed with representatives of WBG, ladies Anabel GONZALEZ Senior Director, Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice, Cecile A FRUMAN, Director of Regional Programs, Martha Martinez LICETTI, Chief Economist, Competition Policy Team Leader, Georgiana POP Expert.
Prospects and possibilities for cooperation were discussed with leaders of the competition authorities, who participated in the roundtable “Competition Policy: Changing mentality through market transformation”.
Official visit of the delegation of the Competition Council in Washington DC, USA, took place between 10-13 October 2014, the delegation participated in the official ceremony of awards in the Contest of the World Bank Group “Actions in promoting competition” for 2013. During this contest, the Competition Council of the Republic of Moldova was honored, to receive Honorable Mention in the category “Raising the awareness degree of the parties engaged in the private sector and consumers’ ability to discourage the anti-competitive practices”.
